12.12.2013 - Who do you see in the mirror? Have you ever wondered why you sound so different when somebody plays back a recording of your voice or the delivery of a presentation?
We, seldom, take the time to properly peer into ourselves with the same inquisitive eyes that we use when we look at others. Over the years, we have built a mental image of ourselves and feel uncomfortable when our physical self sends out psychological clues that contradict our mental image. Being aware and in control with how you are perceived is a key component to building self-confidence.
The gap between who we think we are and who others perceive us to be is further widened under stress. We might not even be aware until after the event of our irrational /out of character behaviour. We often ponder what came upon us ? Ask yourself « How do I behave under stress? What is the impact on me and others around me ? Can I cope? Can they cope?
The source of stress might simply be that we are forced to act outside our psychological preferences or brought upon us by a sudden unplanned event. While usually stressors eventually disappear, in other cases they remain part of our lives. Applying constant daily pressure leads us to exhibit unconscious and irrational responses on a regular basis. The abnormal becomes our new normal! We then display an out of character behaviour that ends up defining us in the eyes of others.
We become our stressed self…
Who do you then see in the mirror - Your true self or the evil twin? Which side do others see? What are the consequences for your health, for the relationships that you engage in at home and at work? How much energy do you use to cope? How long can you continue?
Learning how to manage stress is a crucial skill to live a healthy life. Chronic stress has serious risk to your physical and mental health. If you feel that you have trouble coping, do not ignore the signs!
The next time you peer into the mirror, don't ignore whom you meet!
